Upward Bound is an academic support program
designed to increase high school student’s opportunities in attending
college. Job Summary:
Upward Bound (UB) and Upward Bound
Math/Science (UBMS) Counselor works directly with students in assessing
their academic skills and designing individualized academic plans to
prepare the students for academic success in college. The counselor
also serves as a part of the UB/UBMS professional team and helps plan
and delivers leadership, career, college preparatory and cultural
enrichment events and activities that help to prepare UB/UBMS
participants to succeed in college.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Develop
individualized education plans and referral support services for all
participants. Counsels students on program requirements, academic
goals while evaluating student’s academic history including
transcript evaluation

Counsels and assists students in
accessing needed counseling services, support networks, and/or
community health services
-
Assists students with degree and
course selection. Helps determine educational pathway to meet high
school graduation date and college acceptance
-
Provide support for students
experiencing family, personal, or economic crises, which may affect
academic performance and attendance
-
Creates a seamless process for the
student to attend the college or university of their choice.
Provides student with all necessary information and skills to apply
for college acceptance, scholarships and financial aid and all other
necessary information and resources to ensure academic success

Maintain contact with all area high
schools and colleges and universities. Build positive working
relationships and partnerships with individuals of these
institutions

Meet all federal, state and NACEE
policies and procedures to ensure proper reporting on the Annual
Performance Report in a timely manner
-
Assist and maintains accurate and
active student records and documentation in Blumen database.
Maintains statistical information for reporting purposes.
Qualification:
-
Education Degree: Bachelors Degree
(Master Preferred)
-
Field of Study: Counseling, Education
or Related Field
-
Must interact with students, peers,
management, visitors, clients and vendors in a service-oriented,
professional and helpful manner at all times. Must be able to
interact in a team environment and must be able to role model the
TRIO Upward Bound and NACEE culture
-
At least two years experience
providing counseling services to disadvantaged, racially and
culturally diverse students. Knowledge of secondary and/or post
secondary educational systems. Proven experience in coordinating and
facilitating projects and activities. Experience in managing student
records, assessing student needs and advising and developing student
goals

Good oral and written communication
skills. Proven experience in but not limited to the delivery of
one-on-one and group setting presentations and/or discussions, to
create professional memos, reports and letters, author articles for
bi-annual newsletters and assist students with their oral and
written concerns

Good organizational and time
management skills
-
Proficient in various computer
application to include Microsoft Office
-
Ability to travel in and out of state
for staff meetings and trainings, and with students on college
campus tours, spring and summer leadership component, cultural and
social learning experiences as outlined in the Upward Bound grant.
Possession of , or ability to obtain a current Alabama State
Driver’s License

Ensure confidentiality in accordance
with Family Educational Right and Privacy Act (FERPA). Knowledge of
the policies and procedures of FERPA and the ability to adhere to
all aspects of FERPA within the secondary and postsecondary settings
of Upward Bound
-
Proven experience in workshop and
course development. Ability to create, coordinate and facilitate
innovative and creative program activities, events and workshops for
program participants and their parents
